Week 2 Summary

Well, Week 2 was different. . .

As we all know things don't always go as planned and we have to make adjustments.  This was the first week we had to 'adjust.'  Tuesday went very well.  We talked about different habitats around the world but also about habitats in South Florida.  We also talked about how how plants and animals are different in each habitat and how we adjust to where we live.  For those living where in Missouri it is going to start getting cooler, which means jackets and long pants.  For us here in South Florida, we get to continue to wear our shorts and sleeveless shirts and of course Gert mentioned 'SWIMMING!'  Now occasionally it does get cool in South Florida and earlier this year we had to turn on the heat!  I know you are probably thinking 'Oh you poor thing.'  For native Floridians that is a big deal.

In Social Studies we talked about community helpers.  Sometimes you don't think about all of the community helpers there really are.  Sit down and think about who helps in your community.  I think you will be surprised at the number you find and there are so many more.  We also talked about maps.  My dad always said I was good at maps.  I loved finding where we were going.  As we talked about where different places were and how to get to them, we talked about our future trip to Missouri.  Did I mention how fantastic Google Maps is?  We looked at all different places both local and far away.  I think we both had fun.  After we were done searching for various places, we took time to look at landmarks around the world.  If you haven't used Google Maps, you don't know what you are missing out on.  Due to our around the world discovery, we also talked about different people around the world ~ we are all people but we look different and some of us speak different languages.  Gert made a mobile of people around the world.  Florida is like a melting pot.  We have so many different nationalities.  In our neighborhood, we have Haitian, Hispanic, French, German, and Canadian.  Gert finds it interesting (and sometimes frustrating) that so many people speak so many different languages and that sometimes she doesn't understand what they are saying.

Friday, I had to make adjustments.  Everything I planned went out the window.  At 5:30 AM I awoke to sobbing.  My little peanut was burning up with a temp of 104 and complaining of her tummy hurting resulted in other nasty symptoms.  Due to the high fever in which we were having problems we went to the doctor with concern of appendicitis.  We were so relieved that it wasn't and was just the flu.  Gert was so glad she didn't have to get a shot.  So over the weekend I modified our lesson plans to incorporate the items we missed.
