I really wish that summer didn't have to end. . .
Well that makes two of us, but we as we all know 'the show must go on.' Yesterday we started school at 10:30 AM which is late for us. Gigglin' Gert was not feeling well, but I guess I am the evil Mom because I made her attend school. It took a lot longer than normal, but we accomplished all of our school subjects. My thought process is if she is running a temp or is throwing up, then school will be 'canceled.' I don't know if that is the right choice or not, but I don't want her to use 'I don't feel good' as an excuse to get out of school.
Anyway, today we set a few goals for Gert. Reading is a problem. A big problem. The Dolch Words are the recommended words for each grade. Gert knows a lot of these but there are also a lot she doesn't know. Right now she should be on the second grade level but there are still some in Pre-Primer that she doesn't know. Our goal is to know the Pre-Primer and Primer Words by November. When reading to me in the afternoon she told me, I need to know my words so I can read. But I don't like to read. After we discussed that we need to know our words so we can read better we will enjoy reading more. She was okay with that, so each day she reads to me or to Daddy. Although we sometimes get resistance, she is gaining more confidence in her reading. We are working on a number of other goals which we will be posting at a later date.
This morning I awoke to find Gert still sleeping. This was at 9:30 AM. This child is usually up with the chickens, but not the past two days. She has been going to bed on time, so that is not the problem. If she sleeps late (which rarely happens) we know that she isn't feeling good. For right now I am going to let her sleep but if it persists, we may have to adjust some things. This morning she got up at 10:15 AM. Hopefully we will be able to complete all of our school today and not have 'homework.'
On another note, we signed Gert up for Girl Scouts. She is so excited and cannot wait to meet new friends. I on the other hand am not exactly ready for this. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a fabulous opportunity for her to meet new friends, but I was not big into Girl Scouts. I was in Girl Scouts for maybe 6 months. I did not like it at all. I wanted to be a Boy Scout -- but of course they don't allow girls into Boy Scouts. I hated the girly stuff. In fact I ripped the head off of my Barbie when I was little. Ugh! Barbie! Gert has probably 20 of those things with clothes and accessories along with Polly Pockets (aka Little Barbies) and thanks to her cousin we now have now been invaded by them. She also likes all the cute little dolls, princess stuff, dress-up stuff, and all those other little girlie toys. Gag! I was a tomboy, she this is a foreign concept for me. She also likes to cook -- not only in real life but pretend as well. She has a little stove that my Dad built for me and I think she has played with it more than I or my brother! She loves it. She has lunch, dinners, and sometimes even parties with her Barbies, stuffed animals, dolls and her gazillion imaginary friends. She wears an apron, a chef's hat, makes menus, seats you, takes orders, cooks and serves. Quite the entertainer she is. She definitely keeps us entertained.
